CBD Hemp Oil

One of the compounds of cannabis is Cannabidiol or CBD. There are a number of medicinal uses for CBD oil (see below). People are more open to the medical benefits of CBD, especially now that it can be separated from the THC, known for its psychoactive effects. In order to separate CBD from the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and other parts of the plant, it has to be extracted. The result is CBD hemp oil.

Whole plant extraction:

With this technique, the entire plant is part of the process. Medical Specialists believe that there is a broader spectrum of cannabinoid yields during whole plant extraction.

Isolates extraction:

CBD isolates are pure CBD. These compounds depend on the CBD’s effectiveness as well as the quality of the hemp strain which very much depends on where it originated.

Alcohol extraction:

Whole plant CBD oil can be extracted using alcohol. The hemp plant is soaked in a solvent such as grain alcohol. After soaking, the remaining liquid contains CBD and other cannabinoids from the plant. Once the solvent is evaporated, all that remains is the CBD hemp oil. The CBD oil is then ready for use. CBD hemp oil producers tend to use ethanol to extract CBD.

After soaking in ethanol the CBD-filled ethanol solution moves through a process called a Roto-Vap. The Roto-Vap heats the ethanol solution to speed evaporation. The Roto-Vap captures the ethanol for reuse later and the CBD oil is left behind in a separate compartment.

CO2 extraction:

Another way to extract CBD from cannabis or hemp is with CO2. The CO2 has to be forced through the plant to extract the oil. It involves a series of chambers and their role is to control pressure and temperature. The pressure and temperature force the cannabinoid solutions to react with one another and then separate. As the cannabinoids separate, the chambers collect them separately.

Scientific studies show that CBD Oil can help a wide range of conditions – everything from anxiety to chronic pain:

  • Provides pain relief: Certain components of marijuana – including CBD, are responsible for providing pain relief effects. The human body has an endocannabinoid system that is involved in functions such as appetite, sleep, pain and the immune system response. When the body produces endocannabinoids, neurotransmitters bind to the cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system. Studies show that CBD may reduce chronic pain by impacting the endocannabinoid receptor activity. This reduces inflammation along with interacting with the neurotransmitters.
  • May benefit heart health: CBD has been linked with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system, along with its ability to lower high blood pressure and prevent heart damage. Studies show that CBD may be a natural and effective form of blood pressure treatment. A recent study treated 10 healthy men with one dose of 600mg of CBD oil. They found that they had reduced resting blood pressure when compared to a placebo. Animal studies have also demonstrated that due to its antioxidant and stress-reducing properties, CBD may help to reduce cell death and inflammation associated with heart disease.
  • Improves sleep quality: As an anti-anxiolytic, CBD fights off anxiety – a common factor which causes insomnia. Therefore CBD may help with a better night’s sleep. It may increase sleep amount and quality. In small amounts it can stimulate alertness and reduce daytime sleepiness.
  • May reduce acne: Underlying inflammation and overproduction of sebum in the skin can cause acne. Acne can be attributed to bacteria, genetics or overactive sebaceous glands in the skin which lead to excess oil production. Recent scientific studies indicate that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil may treat acne and reduce sebum production.
  • Reduce stress and anxiety: Cannabidiol has powerful anti-anxiety properties and if administered correctly may be beneficial for treating a wide variety of anxiety related disorders. These include Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Social Phobia, Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Mild to Moderate Depression.
  • Manage Mental Health: Researchers state that CBD has a powerful ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signalling systems that may provide benefits for people with neurological disorders. Several studies have shown promising results for people who have neurological disorders such as Epilepsy and Multiple Sclerosis. CBD has also been shown to improve quality of life and sleep quality for those with Parkinson’s Disease. Animal and test tube studies have also shown that CBD may decrease inflammation and prevent the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • Relieves symptoms of depression: In the same way that CBD benefits people with anxiety and stress, research shows that it causes the 5-HT1A receptor to release more serotonin stabilising serotonin production in the body. The results have been as effective as using anti-depressants.
  • May alleviate cancer-related symptoms: CBD oil has been shown to reduce the symptoms of cancer such as nausea, vomiting and pain. It may also reduce side effects associated with cancer treatment. One study examined the effects of CBD and THC in 177 people with cancer related pain who didn’t experience relief from pain medication. Those treated with the extract containing both compounds found significant pain reduction compared to those only receiving the THC extract. Another study of people undergoing chemotherapy found that a one-to-one combination of CBD and THC administered via mouth spray, reduced chemotherapy related nausea and vomiting much better than just standard treatment.
  • Minimises inflammatory skin conditions: CBD Oil has powerful therapeutic effects for skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis and even Rosacea.
  • Potential Side Effects: CBD oil is safe to use for a wide variety of conditions; however, it is known to react with some medications. If you are on medication, before using CBD Oil, it is recommended that you consult your GP.
  • CBD oil is sold in different potencies so it is a good idea to shop around and find the right one for you.

S. Houghton, Kent.

"I met Fiona at a networking event about two years ago where she was giving a talk on Colon Hydrotherapy, and was immediately impressed with her knowledge and quiet, calm manner. I have been seeing Fiona for nutritional advice and regular colon hydrotherapy treatments ever since and highly recommend her. (I had been looking for someone to go to for colonics for years, and was very happy to finally find someone I felt comfortable with). Fiona gives regular talks to groups and offers her excellent treatments in Tunbridge Wells, Battle and Hastings.  She works to a very high professional standard and is gentle, caring and sensitive. I recommend her to many of my own clients as I feel that nutrition and colon hydrotherapy is so key to overall health and well being - certainly critical to skin condition!"
